What is inside

For you to write in

Ten sections of write-in pages: facts about you for the death certificate, the people in charge and who to call, health and care wishes, where each legal paper is kept, accounts and insurance, home and belongings, digital life, funeral and memorial wishes, letters to the people you love, and a one-page list of where everything is.

For the person who opens it

A plain guide for the first 72 hours, the first two weeks and the first three months, written for someone who is tired and grieving. It covers your rights as a buyer of funeral goods, the death certificate, Social Security, the mail, the will, insurance, the final tax return, and looking after yourself. Every fact comes from one of 13 public sources, each listed by name and web address at the back, with the date it was read.

Three ways in

A short path of four things to do first, a weekend path that covers your people, wishes, papers and money, and a full path that covers everything.

Also inside

Four wallet cards to cut out, with the page behind them left blank. A page for the people who need to know the book exists, with ways to start the conversation. Notes pages, a running log of who has been told, and a yearly review page.

Who it is for

  • A person in the United States who wants to write down what they want and where everything is.

Who it is not for

  • Anyone outside the United States. Laws, deadlines and forms differ by state.

Good to know

It is an organizer. It is not legal, financial, tax or medical advice. It is written for the United States, and laws, deadlines and forms differ by state. For a will, a trust, taxes or health care decisions, talk to a licensed professional where you live. It tells you not to write passwords, full account numbers or Social Security numbers in it, and shows you what to write instead.
