Cake servings calculator
How many slices will your pan give? Pick the shape, the size, how tall the cake is and the slice size. A 9 inch round cake cut into party slices gives 24 servings, and into wedding slices 32.
The counts come from Wilton’s published serving chart. For a pan the chart does not list, the page works it out from the area and says so. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
How the slices are counted
Where the numbers come from.
A serving here is one slice. Two slice sizes are used, the two that Wilton’s chart is built on: a party slice of about 1½ x 2 inches, and a wedding slice of about 1 x 2 inches.
Look the pan up
If your pan is a size in Wilton’s chart (round, square, rectangle or sheet, oval, hexagon, heart or petal), the page gives the chart’s number for your slice size.
Otherwise use the area
The area of the top of the cake divided by the area of one slice, rounded down. A 7 inch round is 38.5 square inches; a party slice is 3. 38.5 ÷ 3 = 12.8, so 12 servings.
Check the height
Cakes 3 to 6 inches tall give the same count. A cake shorter than 3 inches gives half, rounded down. Above 6 inches is outside the chart, so the page marks the count as a guess.
Add the tiers
Each tier is counted by itself and the counts are added. Counting the pan this way assumes every slice is eaten: nothing is held back for the top tier or for seconds.
Servings (not in the chart) = top area ÷ (slice width x slice depth), rounded down
- The chart is a guide. Wilton says its numbers are “intended as a guide only. Actual results may vary.” How you cut changes the count.
- Hexagon, heart and petal pans have no simple area sum, so only the sizes in the chart are offered. Wilton’s table gives 24 party servings for both the 10 inch and the 12 inch heart; it is shown here as published.
- Centimetres are turned into inches (2.54 cm to the inch). A pan counts as a chart size when it is within 0.3 inches of one, so a 23 cm round is treated as the 9 inch round.

Once you know the servings
Turn servings into a price per slice.
This page counts the slices. Fair Slice prices the cake: type what you paid for ingredients, how long the bake takes and how many servings you cut, and it shows the least to charge for the cake and for each slice. It keeps your pantry and recipes, so the next order takes a minute.

Questions
Cake servings: common questions
How many servings in a 9 inch cake?
A round 9 inch cake, 3 to 6 inches tall, gives 24 party slices (about 1½ x 2 in) or 32 wedding slices (about 1 x 2 in), by Wilton’s chart. A 9 inch cake that is shorter than 3 inches gives half.
How many servings in an 8 inch cake?
A round 8 inch cake gives 20 party slices or 24 wedding slices, by the same chart. An 8 inch square gives 20 party or 32 wedding.
What is a party slice and a wedding slice?
They are the two slice sizes Wilton’s chart is based on: a party slice of about 1½ x 2 inches and a wedding slice of about 1 x 2 inches. Wedding slices are smaller, so the same pan gives more of them.
Does the height of the cake change the count?
By the chart, not between 3 and 6 inches: a taller cake in the same pan gives the same number of slices, because it is cut the same way. A cake shorter than 3 inches gives half. Above 6 inches the chart says nothing, so the page marks the count as a guess.
Why is my count lower or higher than the chart?
If your pan is a size in the chart, the page gives the chart’s number. If it is not, the page counts by area, which can differ from a real cutting pattern by about a fifth either way. The number is a guide for planning how much to bake, not a promise of how many slices you will cut.
Does it work in centimetres?
Yes. Switch to centimetres at the top and type your pan and cake height in cm. The page converts them to inches to match the chart. A 23 cm round counts as the 9 inch round.
Is anything saved or sent?
No. What you type stays in this browser tab and is gone when you close or reload the page. Nothing is sent to us.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes, this page is built for a phone as well as a computer.
